Background/Aims:Depression is a common comorbid condition in patients with coronary artery disease (CAD) and a well-documented risk factor for recurrent cardiac events and mortality. We examined the impact of Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) on Depressive Mood in Elderly chronic stable angina patients.
Methods:Consecutive chronic stable angina patients (n = 171) who had undergone elective PCI from January 2010 to May 2010 were included in this study. Patients were subdivided into elderly patients (age ¡Ã 65 years) and non-elderly group (age < 65 years) and then completed 21-item the Beck Depression Inventory II (BDI-II) at baseline and pre-discharge to assess depressive symptoms.
Results:A total of 98( 57 %) patients were assigned to the non-elderly group and 73 (43 %) patients were assigned to the elderly group. Using multivariate regression analysis, we found that the elderly group had increased prevalence of joint disease, lung disease, GI disease, but had less religion and less private health insurance, less occupation, less frequency of regular alcohol use, current smoking and regular exercise compared to the non-elderly patients. The mean difference of BDI-II scores of basal and pre-discharge was higher in elderly patients
Conclusions :Our study showed correlation between the extent of depression and elective PCI, especially in elderly patients ; therefore routine assessment and management of depressive symptoms are justified.
